A research lab in Maryland led by quantum computing firm IonQ is developing advanced quantum computing systems that could revolutionize drug discovery, material science and other complex computational problems.

The lab’s efforts aim to leverage qubit-based processing power to model intricate molecular interactions that are otherwise intractable for classical computers, potentially accelerating breakthroughs in cancer research and other areas. However, experts caution that powerful quantum systems could also undermine current encryption standards, posing risks to data security if quantum-safe defenses are not developed concurrently.

State investments exceeding $1 billion support Maryland’s goal of becoming a leading hub for quantum research and innovation.
