Global memory chip prices have surged sharply in early 2026 as demand from AI infrastructure development has outpaced supply, causing concerns for consumer electronics makers. The rapidly increasing costs are attributed to large investments by major AI players, which are absorbing much of the world’s memory supply.
Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — the world’s leading memory chip producers — have all reported difficulty meeting the high demand, prompting price increases of up to 1,000 % for certain products. Consumer electronics companies including HP, Dell, Xiaomi and Lenovo are raising prices in response, creating headwinds for smartphone, laptop and gaming console sales.
Market analysts warn that elevated memory costs may suppress consumer demand in 2026, particularly among lower-price devices, while AI infrastructure spending continues to dominate semiconductor allocations.
