Bangkok/Phnom Penh, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Thai and Cambodian authorities confirmed on the 9th that they have shortened the entry and stay period for citizens of each other's countries.
During a press conference held in Bangkok on the 9th, spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nikang, answered questions and stated that Thailand has learned that Cambodia has announced a reduction in the entry and stay period for Thai citizens. Thailand has taken corresponding measures to reduce the entry and stay period for Cambodian citizens to 7 days. He stated that it is still uncertain how long this reciprocal measure will last.
According to previous reports from Thai media, the Thai side has shortened the daily opening hours and weekly opening days of some ports in both countries.
On the 9th, Deputy Spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, Dozh Sokag, confirmed to Xinhua News Agency reporters in Phnom Penh that Cambodia has shortened the stay period for Thai citizens entering by land from 60 days to 7 days, and air travelers can still obtain a 14 day visa. Starting from June 10th, the visa period for air passengers will be extended to 60 days. Duozhi Sokag stated that Cambodia has also restricted the opening hours of ports between the two countries.
On May 28th, there was a brief clash between Cambodian and Thai troops in the disputed border area, with the exchange of fire lasting about 10 minutes. One Cambodian soldier died in the conflict. The Cambodia Thailand Joint Border Committee is scheduled to hold consultations on border issues in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on June 14th.
