The 13th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) and the 14th ASEAN Convention on Disaster Management (COP to AADMER) were held on October 16th at the Peace Tower in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Representatives from the ASEAN Disaster Management Committee and partner countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea attended the meeting together.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Ma Nai, as the host, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and proposed five key priorities to enhance the effectiveness of regional disaster prevention and relief cooperation: strengthening emergency preparedness, improving early warning systems to cope with climate change and natural disasters; Promote multi-party partnerships and encourage social forces such as the private sector and academia to participate; Make good use of technological innovation, apply artificial intelligence and data analysis to improve disaster response efficiency; Strengthening global connections and deepening strategic cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations; Promote knowledge sharing and facilitate experience exchange within and across ASEAN.
Cambodian State Minister and First Vice Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, Guan Jin, pointed out at the meeting that the ASEAN region is frequently threatened by multiple natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, floods, and droughts. He believes that this meeting is an important platform for ASEAN member states to showcase the significant progress made over the past two decades, promote regional cooperation, and strengthen disaster emergency response mechanisms. This reaffirms the commitment of all parties to ensure effective disaster management and preparedness in the future, and also highlights the evolution of ASEAN as a global leader in disaster management.
This conference is seen as a key platform for promoting regional cooperation, aimed at showcasing ASEAN's progress in disaster reduction over the past two decades, strengthening its commitment to jointly respond to disasters, and consolidating its role as a global leader in disaster management.
