The Thai government has issued a statement regarding the border situation between Thailand and Cambodia. Cambodia and Thailand will hold a joint border committee meeting on June 14th

On June 4th, the Thai government issued a statement on the border situation between Thailand and Cambodia, emphasizing that Thailand attaches great importance to comprehensively safeguarding Thailand's sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with the principles of international law.

It is reported that on the morning of May 28th, there was a conflict between the two sides in the disputed area of Ubon Province in northeastern Thailand, which borders Cambodia. The exchange of fire lasted for about 10 minutes.

The Thai government statement pointed out that the Thai military was conducting routine patrols within its sovereignty at that time, which was an act of self-defense and a necessary measure taken to protect Thailand's sovereignty. The Thai response was in accordance with international law.

After the incident, the governments of Thailand and Cambodia immediately began consultations. Thai Prime Minister Petantan also had a phone call with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Ma Nai regarding this matter.

Both sides agree to work together to restore normal situation, prevent the escalation of the situation, and use existing bilateral mechanisms to resolve the issue. In addition, the two governments also stressed the importance of communication with the public to prevent misunderstanding between the two peoples.

The statement stated that regarding Cambodia's intention to resort to judicial mechanisms or third parties in this matter, Thailand, as a neighboring country, has always been committed to resolving bilateral issues through peaceful means, based on international law, relevant treaties and agreements (such as the 2000 Cambodian Thai Memorandum of Understanding on Boundary Surveying and Demarcation), and relevant evidence including satellite images.

Thailand is willing to negotiate with Cambodia through existing bilateral mechanisms, such as the Joint Border Committee (JBC), the Joint Border Affairs Committee (GBC), and the Regional Border Committee (RBC). At the request of the Thai side, the Cambodian side has agreed to hold a joint boundary committee meeting on June 14, 2025.

The Thai government reiterates that the overall situation at the Thai Cambodian border is stable. Thailand will resolve this matter peacefully through negotiations with Cambodia and utilizing existing bilateral mechanisms to safeguard Thailand's sovereignty and territorial integrity. I believe that Thailand and Cambodia can ensure the safety of the people in the border areas with the spirit of good neighborliness and friendship, and properly resolve this matter within the framework of the ASEAN family.

At the same time, the Thai government calls on both sides to cooperate to ease local tensions, provide accurate information to the public, and avoid misunderstanding between the two peoples.
