Autonomous Robots Revolutionize Solar Plant Maintenance in ASEAN
Discover how autonomous robots and AI are transforming solar plant maintenance, offering significant benefits for factories in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Autonomous Robots Transforming Solar Plant Maintenance in ASEAN Countries \\[10pt] The European TALOS project, a three-year initiative funded by Horizon Europe, has successfully demonstrated the use of autonomous robots and artificial intelligence (AI) for maintaining solar power plants. This technology, tested at sites in Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands, offers a glimpse into the future of solar plant maintenance, with significant implications for factories in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. \\[10pt] The TALOS system is designed to monitor solar plants, identify performance issues, and recommend economically viable maintenance tasks to human operators. Once approved, the platform can dispatch autonomous machines to perform various tasks, including inspection, cleaning, and vegetation management. The results from these tasks are automatically recorded and fed back into the system, allowing for continuous improvement. \\[10pt] Unlike traditional fixed maintenance schedules, the TALOS platform uses real-time data on production, weather, and field conditions, along with a digital twin of the plant, to identify potential losses and prioritize maintenance tasks based on their value. Human control remains central, as plant managers must approve each proposed mission and can adjust its timing, location, or assigned machine. Additionally, robots can be monitored and stopped remotely, ensuring safety and flexibility. \\[10pt] The TALOS project has been tested at three diverse sites, each with unique challenges. At two hybrid solar and wind facilities in Spain, six different machines, including inspection drones, a configurable ground vehicle, and a large-scale cleaning robot, work across sites totaling 56 MW. In Portugal, a rail-mounted robot cleans panels at a 5 MW floating solar plant, while an uncrewed boat carries an inspection drone from shore. In the Netherlands, a drone and ground robot operate alongside a solar installation in an agrivoltaic pear orchard, with the ground robot also monitoring trees and counting fruit for yield forecasts. \\[10pt] The pilot projects have shown promising results, with up to 90% reduction in human exposure to risk, more than 70% reduction in maintenance windows, approximately 5% lower operations and maintenance costs, and up to 10% less lost production. These outcomes highlight the potential for similar systems to be implemented in ASEAN countries, where solar energy is rapidly growing. \\[10pt] For factories in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the adoption of such autonomous maintenance systems could lead to significant cost savings and improved operational efficiency. However, the main barriers to wider deployment include regulatory differences, uncertain liability for autonomous systems, and gaps in regulations surrounding technologies like floating solar and agrivoltaics. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for the successful implementation of this technology in the region. \\[10pt] In conclusion, the TALOS project demonstrates the transformative potential of autonomous robots and AI in solar plant maintenance. For factory buyers in ASEAN, investing in these technologies can lead to substantial improvements in safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, making it a compelling option for the future of solar energy in the region.
