Siemens vs FANUC vs Mitsubishi: Choosing a CNC Control for ASEAN Shops

The control brand matters far less than the model designation, the simultaneous-axis ceiling, the paid option list and who holds the parameter backup — with first-party spec examples from ASEAN-market machining centers.

The short answer

For a Chinese-built machining center in the ASEAN price band, the control **brand** is close to the least decisive line on the quotation. Siemens, FANUC and Mitsubishi are all serviceable from Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, and all three will cut your parts. Four other things decide the next five years: the exact **model designation** hiding behind the brand name, that model's **simultaneous-axis ceiling**, which **software options** were actually paid for, and **who holds the parameter and ladder backup** when the machine goes down. Settle those four in writing, then compare prices.

First check whether it is a three-way choice at all

The "Siemens vs FANUC vs Mitsubishi" framing comes from the European and North American installed base. On the machines an ASEAN shop actually shortlists, a fourth name ships more often than any of the three.

Read the controller line on real listings. The [LIDEMA VMC855](/en/products/lidema-cnc-wenzhou-lidema-vmc855-vertical-machining-center) ships a Taiwan SYNTEC 22MA bus-type controller with a 10.4-inch display; so does the [LIDEMA T5 drilling and tapping center](/en/products/lidema-cnc-wenzhou-lidema-t5-vertical-drilling-tapping-center) and the rest of that family. Syntec is not an obscure choice in this region: the company runs a subsidiary in Bangkok and, since 2017, one in Vietnam. LNC is a similar story.

So if your reason for insisting on FANUC is "everybody has FANUC, so parts and operators are easy", check that the *everybody* you mean sits in Rayong or Binh Duong rather than Ohio. That does not make Syntec the correct answer. It means the real shortlist question is which controls are supported within a day's drive of your plant, by whom, and how you would verify it — not which of three famous names sounds safest.

"Siemens / FANUC / Mitsubishi" is a menu, not a specification

Builders in this segment legitimately support several control families, and their listings say so. The [HALLERBS HL-V856](/en/products/hallerbs-hl-v856) and its siblings list **Control: Siemens / FANUC / Mitsubishi**. As an offer that is correct and genuinely useful — the builder will fit any of the three. As a specification it is empty, because every number that matters lives in the model, not the brand. "Siemens" spans the 808D, which Siemens itself positions as a panel-based CNC for the basic performance range, through the 828D compact and mid-range class, up to SINUMERIK ONE. Those are not the same purchase.

The shape of answer you want appears on the [Vanant A1370 vertical machining center](/en/products/vanant-drilling-center-vanant-a1370-vertical-machining-center): **Controller: Mitsubishi M80B / FANUC 0i-MF-PLUS**. Two named models. Now the specification is lookup-able.

Ask in each vendor's own vocabulary and it becomes hard to fudge:

  • **Siemens** — the MLFB order number (the 6FC5… string), not the word "Siemens".
  • **FANUC** — series and model (0i-MF Plus, 31i-B5 and so on), plus the printed option list.
  • **Mitsubishi** — the NC specification selection sheet, filled in, not just the series name.

The number that quietly decides your 2029 job mix

Both controls offered on that A1370 line stop in the same place. FANUC's published specification for the **0i-MF Plus** gives maximum controlled axes of 11 total and 9 per path across up to 2 paths — and **4 simultaneously controlled axes per path**. Mitsubishi's **M80** family scales to 16–32 axes and up to 8 spindles, and likewise lists **4 simultaneous contouring control axes**.

Four is plenty for a 3-axis mill, and plenty for a 4th-axis rotary used as an indexer or for simple wrapped contouring. Four is not simultaneous 5-axis. That ceiling sits in the control, not in the iron — which is why the controller line on a genuinely 5-axis machine reads differently. The [Vanant U380 five-axis machining center](/en/products/vanant-drilling-center-vanant-u380-five-axis-machining-center) lists **Syntec, LNC, Siemens**, alongside a −120° to +120° tilt range, BBT40 / HSK-A63 spindle taper and 12,000–20,000 rpm spindle options. The two entry-class Japanese controls have quietly dropped off the menu.

The procurement consequence is blunt: if simultaneous 5-axis is anywhere in your three-year plan — impeller work, medical, complex tooling — that decision is made when you sign for *this* machine, not later at a retrofit. Put it in the RFQ and let the builder quote a class that supports it.

Options and backups: two clauses worth more than the brand argument

A CNC is sold as a base plus paid, keyed options. Rigid tapping, high-speed look-ahead, probing cycles, extra axes: industry practice among machine tool builders is that these are enabled per control serial number and sit behind builder-held passwords. This is described consistently in control vendor technical material and in machinist forums rather than in any published price list, so treat it as the norm to verify, not a documented rule. The effect for a buyer in Chonburi is that a function you assumed was standard can turn into a purchase order two years from now, routed through a builder who may no longer answer email.

Two clauses fix most of this, and both are verifiable at factory acceptance:

1. **The option list, printed from the control**, attached to the acceptance record. 2. **A full data backup taken in front of your inspector, with one copy leaving with your engineer.** On FANUC controls the built-in All Data Backup writes a defined file set to CF card or USB, including CNC-PARA.TXT (NC parameters), PMC1_PRM.TXT (PLC parameters), MACRO.TXT and **PITCH.TXT**. That last file holds the pitch-error compensation table — the machine's measured geometric correction. Lose it and you have lost part of the accuracy you paid for and witnessed at acceptance. The A1370 is rated ±0.007 mm positioning and ±0.003 mm repeatability; numbers of that order do not survive a control board swap without the compensation data.

Add the PLC ladder and a written statement of who holds the builder password. If the answer is "the builder only", price that risk.

What local support actually covers

FANUC Thai operates from Pattanakarn Road in Bangkok. FANUC Vietnam runs a Ho Chi Minh City head office in the Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone plus a Hanoi branch and a Nghe An satellite office. Mitsubishi Electric's factory automation organisation covers Thailand, and Syntec has subsidiaries in both Thailand and Vietnam. On paper, all of these are reachable.

Note the boundary, though. The control vendor supports the control: drives, servos, hardware, control-side firmware. The PLC ladder, the tool-changer macros, the alarm texts and the machine parameters are the builder's work. When the ATC jams at 2 a.m., FANUC Thai can confirm the servo is healthy; only the builder's ladder explains why the arm stopped mid-cycle. Ask in writing who answers that call, in which language, within how many hours — and insist on a named local integrator if the builder has none.

Then ask your own people. The cheapest control to own is usually the one your setters and programmers already read without hesitating, and your CAM post-processor already supports.

Conclusion

Compare CNC quotations at the model level, never the brand level: type designation, simultaneous-axis ceiling, printed option list, backup and ladder ownership, named local support. A shop that gets those five lines onto the purchase order rarely regrets the brand it chose.
