Industrial Dust & Fume Extraction for ASEAN Factories: Capture Velocity, Filter Class and Explosion Risk

The number that decides whether dust and fume extraction works - air velocity at the source - is on no quotation: what ASEAN buyers should measure, demand and write into the purchase order.

Dust and fume extraction is the one factory purchase where the number that decides success — air velocity at the point the contaminant is born — appears on no quotation you will receive. Suppliers quote airflow in m3/h, motor power and filter area; all three describe the box in the corner, not the air at the arc. Before comparing two quotes, do three things: measure how far your welders actually park the nozzle, decide whether your dust can explode, and name a filter test standard in the purchase order. Get those right and a modest unit works; get them wrong and the largest unit on the market will not.

The number that decides this is not on the quotation

What captures fume is velocity at the source, not volume at the fan. The US OSHA Technical Manual sets a hard limit on hood reach: the source should be no more than **1.5 duct diameters** from the hood opening. For the 160 mm arm shipped with most Chinese welding fume units, that is **240 mm** — closer than many welders tolerate, because at 240 mm the nozzle is in the way.

The decay is worth memorising. OSHA's worked figures: at 3,000 fpm (15.2 m/s) duct velocity, capture velocity one duct diameter out is about 300 fpm (1.5 m/s); at two duct diameters it falls tenfold, to 30 fpm (0.15 m/s). Since OSHA also notes 50 fpm (0.25 m/s) is the minimum a vane anemometer reads, capture velocity two duct diameters out is below what your instrument can measure.

The action costs nothing: walk the shop with a tape measure before shortlisting anything. If the honest answer is 400-600 mm, and it usually is, no arm on either quotation will work as an arm — you are buying on-gun extraction, an enclosure or a downdraft table, which is a different RFQ.

Your cooling strategy is fighting your extraction

This is why a correctly sized unit works in the supplier's demo room in Jiangsu and fails in Rayong or Bekasi. OSHA states it plainly: **strong cross-drafts can easily reduce a hood's effectiveness by 75%.** A tropical shop floor is a cross-draft machine by design — HVLS ceiling fans, drum fans aimed at the welders, open-sided sheds, wall exhaust fans. Each was installed to make 34 C bearable; each blows across the exact 240 mm your hood needs.

Keep high-volume air out of the welding cells, or screen them — and plan make-up air, because ducting 3,000 m3/h out of a closed shed pulls 3,000 m3/h of 33 C outdoor air back through every gap in the cladding.

The filter class you can put in a purchase order

In March 2017 the IARC reclassified **welding fume as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans** (Monographs Volume 118), up from Group 2B in 1989; UV radiation from welding was classified Group 1 at the same time. Extraction is carcinogen control, not a comfort item — which exposes how little "99.9% high-efficiency" is worth when the claim names no test.

Two demandable clauses:

  • **EN ISO 21904-2:2020** — requirements for testing and marking the separation efficiency of welding fume capture and separation equipment; it largely supersedes EN ISO 15012-1. Ask for the marking, not a percentage in an email.
  • **Separation class W3** — industry practice puts this at 99% or better separation; it is the class specified for high-alloy chromium- and nickel-bearing steels, certified by Germany's IFA. If you fabricate stainless, this is your line item.

One inversion worth knowing: European buyers accept recirculating units because ducting filtered air outdoors throws away paid-for heating. You have no heating to throw away, so in ASEAN there is no energy argument for returning carcinogenic fume to the shop. Read "recirculation" on a stainless quote as a saving for the supplier, and specify ducted discharge.

Size the filter — and the fan bill — yourself

Air-to-cloth ratio — airflow divided by media area — is the best check on an under-filtered "purifier", computable from any quotation giving both numbers. Industry practice for manual welding is roughly **2.5-3.5 cfm/ft2 (0.76-1.07 m/min)**; high-production robotic welding is tighter, about 1.5-2.1 cfm/ft2.

On a 3,000 m3/h unit: 3,000 / 60 = 50 m3/min, so at 1.0 m/min you need roughly **50 m2 of media**, nearer 65 m2 at the conservative end. If the quotation lists 12 m2, the implied ratio exceeds 4 m/min, several times the band: cartridges blind, airflow falls away within months, and replacement elements become the real price of the machine. Media is what costs the supplier money, so media is what gets trimmed. Then the running cost. Through fixed ductwork, resistance rises with the square of airflow and fan power with the **cube**: specify 25% more airflow than you need and you have signed up for roughly **95% more fan power** for the life of the system. Required airflow itself rises with the square of hood-to-source distance, so hood placement is the cheapest energy decision available. (Thailand's ERC set the September-December 2026 average tariff at 3.95 baht/unit excluding VAT, then trimmed September bills to roughly 3.86-3.89. Arithmetic on stated assumptions, not measured data.) Note too that **Nm3/h is not m3/h**, and ask for the fan curve: airflow is never a property of a fan, only of where its curve meets your duct curve.

If the dust can burn, this is a different purchase

Grinding, sanding, blasting and food-plant dusts are not fume, and the governing question is combustibility. The map changed recently: **NFPA 660 (2025 edition) took effect on 6 December 2024, consolidating NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655 and 664 into one standard** — combustible metals became Chapter 22, agricultural and food processing Chapter 21. If a supplier's compliance letter cites NFPA 652 or 654, it cites withdrawn documents.

The requirements most often priced out of a cheap quotation: aluminium, magnesium and titanium grinding dust belongs in a **wet collector, not a dry one**; dry collectors on combustible metals go **outdoors**, with barriers protecting personnel; and deflagration venting on ductwork must relieve to a safe outdoor location. Thai and Vietnamese plants handling flour, sugar, rice or milk powder fall under the same logic in the food chapter.

Before you send the RFQ

Measure the real hood-to-source distance, map where your comfort air blows, and decide combustible or not. Then require in writing: the fan curve, media area in m2, the EN ISO 21904-2 marking (W3 for stainless), and the explosion-protection scope with its standard named. For exposure limits, Thailand works under the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Act B.E. 2554 (2011) and its 2013 dangerous-chemicals ministerial regulation — take the current list from your regulator, not an equipment vendor.

Chinese suppliers can meet all of this — but only what you name in the purchase order gets built.
