Electric Forklift Selection for ASEAN Warehouses: Lithium vs Lead-Acid

Lead-acid is still right for single-shift ASEAN warehouses; lithium wins at two or three shifts. Convert every quote to kWh, count your real charging windows, price them at your own tariff, and put battery weight and tray standard in the purchase order.

For a single-shift ASEAN warehouse, lead-acid is usually still the right buy. Lithium becomes right at two or three shifts, in cold storage, or when you have no floor space for a battery room. You cannot make that call from the quotation in front of you, because Chinese electric-forklift quotes describe the battery in amp-hours — and amp-hours are not energy. Convert every option to kilowatt-hours, then answer three questions: usable kWh per charge, when the truck can be plugged in, and what a kilowatt-hour costs at that hour.

Convert every quote to kilowatt-hours first

Battery energy is volts times amp-hours, so two quotes carrying the same amp-hour figure are not the same battery. Identical "205Ah", twenty percent more energy, and the amp-hour column never tells you so.

Then turn nominal energy into usable energy, where the chemistries stop being comparable. Industry practice is not to discharge **lead-acid** past about 80% depth of discharge, because deeper discharge accelerates plate sulfation and cuts cycle life; budget 0.8 x nominal. On **lithium (LFP)** far more of the pack is usable, and partial top-up cycles are not penalised as they are in lead-acid.

Lithium in a Chinese quote is usually a smaller battery, not a bigger one

A lead-acid pack for a 3-ton counterbalance truck is typically configured around 80 V and 500–600 Ah — 40 to 48 kWh nominal, very roughly 32 to 38 kWh usable. The 16.4 kWh lithium option above delivers well under half that per charge. Lithium wins not by storing more energy but by being refillable inside the working day — a full charge in one to two hours with no cool-down, plus top-ups during 15–30 minute breaks, against lead-acid's conventional 8-8-8 pattern of eight hours work, eight charging, eight cooling.

Read that as an operational requirement, not a feature. **A lithium truck is a truck you recharge twice a day.** It works only if chargers sit where trucks actually pause, and if supervisors treat a truck plugged in over lunch as normal rather than as a truck that has stopped working. Vendor and dealer accounts — practitioner reports, not controlled data — describe fleets that bought lithium, skipped the charger-layout question, and ended the day with much of the fleet under 30% state of charge. If you run one 8-hour shift and park overnight, that advantage is worth nothing to you.

Two tropical facts that are not in the sales deck

**Heat closes the charging window you were counting on.** LFP charging is generally limited to roughly 0–45 °C cell temperature, and the BMS enforces it. In a 35 °C un-air-conditioned warehouse in Rayong, Bekasi or Binh Duong, a pack that has worked hard for four hours is hottest exactly at the break when your plan says top it up. Ask in writing for the charge current the pack accepts versus temperature, and where the sensors sit. The 2,000–3,000 cycle figures you will be quoted are lab numbers at around 25 °C, and vendor testing reports meaningfully lower retention on high-temperature cycling — treat quoted cycle life as a ceiling you will not reach.

**Opportunity charging moves your electricity into the expensive hours.** Lead-acid's overnight charge lands in off-peak by construction; lithium's headline benefit — charge during breaks — puts consumption at midday. Thailand's ERC set the average tariff at 3.95 baht per unit excluding VAT for September–December 2026 (trimmed about six satang for September bills), and the industrial time-of-use structure published for the May–August window put on-peak at 5.27 and off-peak at 3.80 baht per kWh. On stated assumptions — one 3-ton truck using 12 kWh per working day over 250 days — moving that consumption from off-peak to on-peak costs roughly 4,400 baht per truck per year. That is arithmetic on assumptions, not a measured statistic. The larger effect is usually demand, not energy: ten trucks each drawing on the order of 10 kW to refill 16 kWh in an hour and a half is about 100 kW of coincident load every lunchtime, and Thai industrial bills carry demand charges. Get your own demand-charge rate from PEA or MEA before promising anyone a saving.

What lead-acid actually costs you is floor area

The honest argument for lithium is not the battery, it is the room. Charging flooded lead-acid evolves hydrogen, and IEC 62485-3 governs the ventilation required to keep concentration below the 4% by volume lower explosive limit, with a clearance — 0.5 m in the DIN EN version — between cell openings and possible ignition sources. Add watering, an acid-resistant floor, eyewash, spill containment and a charger bay per truck. In a Thai or Vietnamese industrial park that is built floor area you are not filling with inventory: a one-off capital and space cost against a recurring energy and lock-in cost, and which side wins is site-specific.

Two numbers that belong in the purchase order

**Battery weight.** On a counterbalance truck the battery is structural — it *is* part of the counterweight. The [3-ton machine](/en/products/ali-store-3-ton-lower-operating-cost-electric-forklift-for-warehouse-logistics) above lists a service weight of **4,535 kg** to lift 3,000 kg at a 500 mm load centre. A lithium pack of comparable class weighs a third to a half of the lead-acid battery it replaces, so the capacity stamped on the data plate is no longer supported unless ballast is added. Require in writing: minimum and maximum battery weight, the shipped pack's actual weight, ballast where needed, and a capacity plate re-issued for the truck as delivered.

**Tray and interface.** Lead-acid traction batteries follow dimensional standards — DIN 43531 for 48 V and DIN 43535 for 24 V trays — which is why a shop in Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City can sell you a replacement in year five. A proprietary lithium pack with a closed BMS makes one supplier your only supplier for the life of the truck. Ask for the tray footprint, whether it matches a DIN size, the BMS protocol, and whether a third-party charger runs it.

Getting it here, and what to demand instead of "CE"

A lithium pack shipped on its own is UN3480, Class 9 dangerous goods. Ocean freight out of China requires a UN 38.3 test report and SDS, dangerous-goods packaging, Class 9 marks and labels, and IMDG-compliant booking; FCL is markedly simpler than LCL. Practically, the battery may not travel with the truck and has its own lead time — write into the PO who books that leg, and treat the battery's ETA as a separate date.

Do not accept "CE" as an answer on an industrial truck. Ask which standards were applied: **EN ISO 3691-1** for the safety of self-propelled industrial trucks and **EN 1175** for electrical and electronic requirements, including the performance level of safety-related control functions.

The tier most buyers skip

Before buying any battery, check whether the movement needs one.
