Chinese suppliers are deepest in depaneling, soldering and optical inspection and thinnest at fine-pitch placement — buy by process step, and check the two specs Thai plants get caught by: depaneler keep-out distance and MSL floor-life humidity.
For Thailand's electronics sector, Chinese suppliers are deepest at the **back end** of the line — depaneling, laser and selective soldering, hot riveting, marking, board handling and optical inspection — and thinnest at the front end, where fine-pitch placement, HDI laser drilling and X-ray inspection are still dominated by Japanese, Korean and European builders. So buy by process step, not by "SMT line". And note that two specifications which decide whether a Chinese line actually performs in a Thai plant are usually missing from the quotation — the depaneler's keep-out distance, and the moisture regime your components' floor-life clock assumes.
Thailand's PCB Wave: Why the Demand Is Real
Electronics accounted for **27.4% of Thailand's total export value in 2024**, growing at a 9.3% CAGR over 2019–2024, led by computers and peripherals (27.0%), hard disk drives (19.5%) and integrated circuits (16.4%); bare PCBs were 2.5% (Krungsri Research). Over the first ten months of 2025, IC exports rose **30.5% year-on-year to USD 9.3 billion**.
Equipment demand sits on the investment side. Between 2022 and June 2025, **180 PCB projects** filed for BOI promotion with a combined value above **THB 200 billion**; in the first nine months of 2025 the electrical and electronics group filed THB 180 billion more, 92.6% of it smart electronics; in May 2026 the BOI approved a further THB 22.2 billion across three PCB manufacturers.
Most incoming plants arrive with their front-end decisions already made. The realistic opportunity — and the realistic purchase for a Thai buyer — is the surrounding process steps and the local supply chain feeding those plants.

The Cheapest Machine on the Line Writes Your Warranty Claims
Depaneling is the last line item to be argued over and the first place latent field failures are created. Multilayer ceramic capacitors crack under board flexure, and those cracks often pass both optical inspection and in-circuit test before failing months later in the field. Vendors and industry media report cracking thresholds around 800–1,800 microstrain, routers spiking above 800 and UV laser ablation staying below 50 — useful as direction, but these are supplier-published figures rather than independent studies, so do not adopt them as your numbers.

If your layout is frozen with an MLCC 0.8 mm from the score line, price negotiation will not repair that mismatch.

In a Thai Plant, the Humidity Risk Is Moisture, Not Static
The common shop-floor assumption — "it is humid here, so static is not our problem" — gets both halves wrong.
**ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021** requires a written control program, defined ESD Protected Areas, personnel grounding, equipotential bonding of surfaces and tooling, ESD packaging and a documented compliance verification plan. It grants no exemption for ambient humidity; high RH is not a substitute for a grounded EPA.
Moisture is the larger, quieter exposure. Under IPC/JEDEC **J-STD-033**, floor life for moisture-sensitive devices is defined at **≤30 °C / 60% RH** — MSL 3 is 168 hours at that condition, with bake-out for thin packages typically 125 °C for 24 hours. Bangkok's monthly mean relative humidity runs roughly **74–85%**, averaging near 80% across the year. An unconditioned floor therefore sits outside the condition the clock was written for: a traveller marked "MSL 3, 168 h" describes a room you do not have. The defect surfaces later as popcorning or delamination at reflow — and gets blamed on the reflow oven.
So dry cabinets, a bake oven and a documented MSD handling procedure belong in the same capex line as the placement and reflow equipment. Ask any supplier quoting a "complete line" to show where those sit in the layout.
AOI: Megapixels Are Not Resolution
Datasheets in this segment lead with camera megapixels, monitor size and machine weight. None tell you the smallest defect the machine can call. Two numbers do: **resolution in µm, and the smallest component or pitch it is specified to inspect.**
Good examples set the standard to demand. One [inline AOI machine](/en/products/ali-store-saki-automated-optical-inspection-aoi-automated-machine) specifies 18 µm resolution, board thickness 0.6–2.5 mm, warp tolerance ±2 mm and boards from 50 × 60 to 330 × 250 mm. An [offline unit](/en/products/ali-store-high-precision-offline-aoi-machine-aoi-optical-testing-machine-for-led-pcb) specifies a minimum component size of 0603 across a 25 × 25 to 460 × 340 mm range. Anything vaguer is a brochure.
Note the environmental envelope: that inline unit is rated **15–30 °C, 15–80% RH non-condensing** — written for an air-conditioned room, not an open Thai shop floor. Confirm the envelope, then confirm your room matches it.
Finally, ask about false calls. Practitioners on SMT forums report real-world rates from about 5% to 12% of inspection points, one automotive user citing roughly 20 ppm false fails against 1–2 ppm escapes; common guidance targets under 10%. These are practitioner reports, not controlled statistics. The trap is second-order: when reviewers see mostly false calls they develop a pass reflex, and the machine begins producing escapes through the operator. Require a demonstration on **your** board with your own defect set.
The BOI Clock Is a Purchasing Constraint
If the project is BOI-promoted, the incentive puts dates on the equipment decision. Duty-exempt machinery generally must be imported **within 30 months** of the promotion certificate date and used solely for the promoted product **for more than five years**. Used machinery can qualify, but requires documentation including reconditioning details and a remaining-life analysis. A twenty-week lead time, or a machine you expect to replace in three years, is therefore a compliance question and not only a commercial one. Confirm HS classification and duty treatment with your broker against your own certificate — never against the seller's assurance.
Conclusion
Thailand's electronics build-out is real, and the Chinese offering around it — depaneling, soldering, inspection and handling — is genuinely deep and worth buying. Buy it step by step: make the depaneler prove its keep-out against your worst-case layout, make the AOI prove its false-call rate on your board, and budget the dry cabinet alongside the line rather than after it.
