Innovative Rock-to-Fertilizer Method Could Boost ASEAN Agriculture

To overcome this, they crushed the rocks to increase the surface area, added water and alkaline or acidic agents, and heated the mixture to just under 200°C. This process converts the minerals from an insoluble to a soluble state, making the potassium readily available for plants.\\The modified rocks, when soaked in water, release an initial burst of potassium and calcium, followed by a slower, sustained release of other beneficial nutrients such as silicon and magnesium. Lab tests showed that crops like corn and soybeans can take up these nutrients just as effectively as from conventional potash fertilizers. This breakthrough has the potential to reduce the dependency on imported fertilizers, which are often expensive and subject to supply chain disruptions. For ASEAN countries, this could mean more sustainable and cost-effective agricultural practices.\\In Thailand, where rice and rubber are major crops, this method could help farmers improve soil fertility and crop yields. In Vietnam, known for its coffee and tea plantations, the new fertilizer could enhance the quality and quantity of these high-value crops. In Indonesia, with its vast palm oil and cocoa plantations, the use of locally sourced potassium fertilizer could boost productivity and reduce costs. Similarly, in Malaysia, where oil palm and rubber are key industries, this innovation could lead to more resilient and productive farms.\\The next steps for the research team include conducting larger field tests to ensure the new fertilizer works at scale and fine-tuning the process to make it easy and cost-effective to produce.
