Nuclear Waste to Power: A Game-Changer for ASEAN Factories \\[10pt] In a groundbreaking development, Nuclea Energy, a developer of lead-cooled microreactors, has acquired the entire technology catalog of Moltex Energy. This acquisition brings together two innovative approaches to non-water reactor cooling: heavy liquid lead and fluoride or chloride salts. The deal not only combines advanced reactor designs but also introduces a novel method for recycling nuclear waste, potentially transforming it into a valuable energy resource for Southeast Asian factories. \\[10pt] One of the key technologies in the acquired portfolio is the Waste to Stable Salt (WATSS) process. This method extracts transuranic actinides from spent nuclear fuel and blends them into liquid chloride salts, avoiding the creation of pure plutonium streams. The WATSS process has been successfully tested using actual irradiated fuel at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, confirming its viability. \\[10pt] The recycled chemical feedstock is designed to power the Stable Salt Reactor–Wasteburner (SSR-W), which operates on a fast-neutron spectrum. This design allows high-energy collisions to split the long-lived actinides, generating between 300 and 500 megawatts of electricity. The SSR-W uses natural convection currents to dissipate decay heat, eliminating the need for emergency electrical power. \\[10pt] For factories in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, this technology could provide a reliable and sustainable energy source. The SSR-W's ability to generate significant amounts of electricity from nuclear waste could reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and lower operational costs. Additionally, the FLEX reactor, another addition to Nuclea's portfolio, can produce coolant temperatures around 750 degrees Celsius, suitable for synthetic fuel synthesis and heavy manufacturing processes. \\[10pt] The acquisition also includes Nuclea's flagship Morpheus microreactor, which uses molten lead coolant and a graphite moderator to supply between 3.5 and 50 megawatts of electricity. This compact and transportable reactor is ideal for remote mining operations, island grids, and defense sites, making it a versatile solution for various industrial applications in ASEAN countries. \\[10pt] The agreement transfers 80 granted patents and nine pending patents, covering a wide range of technical categories. These concepts have been refined through collaborative research with leading institutions such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and Ontario Power Generation. \\[10pt] For factory buyers in ASEAN, the integration of these advanced nuclear technologies offers a promising solution to energy challenges. By converting nuclear waste into a valuable energy resource, factories can achieve greater energy security, reduce environmental impact, and enhance their overall operational efficiency. As the region continues to grow and industrialize, these innovations could play a crucial role in ensuring a sustainable and resilient energy future.
