Plastic Injection Molding Machine Buying Guide for Vietnamese Manufacturers: Mold Fit, Shot Size and the Dryer Spec Nobody Publishes
Size an injection molding machine from your mold and your resin, not the tonnage headline: clamping force, tie-bar and daylight fit, shot size in cm3 at 20-80% of barrel, plus the dryer dew point that is missing from almost every Chinese listing.
Size the press from your mold and your resin, not from the tonnage headline on a quotation. Clamping force first, then shot size in cm3 held to 20-80% of barrel capacity, then the three fit dimensions that decide whether your existing tool can be bolted in at all — tie-bar clearance, mold thickness range and locating ring diameter. Size the dryer last but treat it as critical: in Vietnam's humidity that is where hygroscopic resins are lost. Expect the listing to be incomplete — across the 799 products published on this site, "EUROMAP" appears zero times and a dew point appears once.
Start With the Mold, Not the Tonnage
Clamping force is the easiest number to estimate: projected area of part and runners times a clamp factor, which industry practice puts at 2-8 tons per square inch depending on wall thickness, flow length and melt stiffness, with 4-5 tons/in2 as a common default. Too little and the mold breathes, giving flash at the parting line.
But tonnage is rarely what stops a machine from running your mold. Geometry is:
- **Clear distance between tie bars** — the mold has to pass between them.
- **Minimum and maximum mold thickness (daylight)** — a mold below the minimum cannot be clamped safely.
- **Locating ring diameter** — the register your sprue bushing seats into.
- **Ejector pattern and stroke** — the knockout hole layout must match your ejector plate.

On the other 14 a buyer cannot tell whether their sprue bushing will seat. This is not peculiar to us; it is what supplier-filled spec tables look like across Chinese B2B listings. Treat the published table as a list of questions, not a datasheet.
Shot Size Is Quoted in Polystyrene, and Your Part Is Not Polystyrene
Maximum shot weight is conventionally rated in general-purpose polystyrene. If you mold PET (about 1.38 g/cm3), POM (about 1.41) or glass-filled nylon, the gram figure in the table is not your capacity — convert to volume and compare cm3 with cm3. Then respect the window: PP, PE and PS run best at 20-80% of barrel capacity, engineering resins usually at 30-50%. Below it resin dwells too long in a hot barrel and degrades; above it you lose cushion and shot-to-shot consistency.
This is also the fastest audit of a spec sheet, because the two numbers must agree. Divide quoted shot weight by quoted shot volume and you get an implied melt density:

No thermoplastic approaches the bottom two figures, so in each of those pairs one number is wrong — and you want to know which before the mold trial. The same reading catches unit errors: [the 3-ton desktop press](/en/products/ali-store-3-ton-horizontal-desktop-injection-molding-machine-for-small-plastic-parts) lists "Installed Power: 220 kW" on a 900 kg machine, which is a 220 V supply in the wrong field. Ask for the manufacturer's own datasheet, and ask which resin the shot rating assumes.
The Dryer Decides Whether Vietnam Gets Good Parts
PET, PA, PC and PBT are hygroscopic — they take moisture into the pellet, not merely onto it. Hot air removes surface moisture, enough for polyolefins, PS and PVC, but it does not dry the inside of a PET pellet. Mold those resins wet and the chains hydrolyse: an irreversible loss of mechanical properties. The parts look acceptable and break in service. Published practice for container-grade PET is drying to roughly 50 ppm residual moisture on desiccant air at about -40 degrees C dew point, 150-175 degrees C, for 4-6 hours of residence.
In Bien Hoa, Binh Duong or Hai Phong, a hot-air hopper dryer heats ambient air that is warm and humid most of the year. That raises how much moisture the air *can* hold; it does not lower the dew point of the air touching your pellets.

Exactly one states a dew point: [this dehumidifying dryer](/en/products/ali-store-pet-flakes-dehumidifying-hopper-dryer-energy-saving-tpu-material-dryer), at -35 to -40 degrees C. **None states a desiccant type, and none states a target residual moisture.** Across all 799 published products, "dew point" appears in one specification and "ppm" in two.
The one specification that decides whether your PET or nylon parts survive is missing from almost every listing you would buy from. Demand three numbers in writing: dew point at the hopper inlet, throughput in kg/h at your drying temperature, and hopper volume matched to the residence time on your resin datasheet.
What Vietnam Actually Requires
**Safety standard.** EN ISO 20430:2020 is the injection-molding-machine safety standard, harmonised in 2021 under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Zero of our 799 published products cite it, and zero cite EUROMAP. **Used machines.** Decision 18/2019/QD-TTg caps used machinery imports at 10 years of age, requires the equipment to serve your own production, and requires conformity with safety and environmental standards. It was amended by Decision 28/2022/QD-TTg and longer limits apply to some sectors — confirm the current text with your broker.
**Classification.** Injection-molding machines fall under HS 8477.10, where clamp force drives the subheading detail. **Electricity, and why installed power now matters.** EVN's average price was set at VND 2,204.07/kWh excluding VAT from May 2025, the fourth rise since early 2023 and roughly 17% cumulatively. MOIT approved a two-part retail tariff trial from October 2025 for industrial customers drawing at least 200,000 kWh a month, with wider implementation planned from 2026. Under a two-part tariff, connected capacity is billed alongside energy — so installed power stops being a footnote.
For scale, reported specific energy consumption runs about 0.3 kWh/kg for efficient thin-wall work and 0.6 kWh/kg for thicker slower parts; one US study measured 0.612 kWh/kg hydraulic against 0.161 all-electric on comparable work. On stated assumptions, 150 tonnes of resin a year at 0.60 versus 0.35 kWh/kg is a 37,500 kWh gap, roughly VND 82.6 million a year — arithmetic, not a measurement. Ask for metered consumption on a comparable mold.
**Resin, not iron, is your cost base.** The Vietnam Plastics Association puts raw-material localisation at only 15-20%, so 80-85% of virgin resin is imported — USD 11.8 billion in 2024, up 20.7% year on year. Machine choice reaches your P&L through scrap rate and energy, not sticker price.
Conclusion
A press that fits your mold and a dryer that matches your resin beat a cheaper machine on every number that reaches your accounts. Before paying a deposit, get every field named above on the manufacturer's letterhead — the fit dimensions, shot volume in cm3 with the rating resin named, metered power, dryer dew point, and the safety standard by number.
