Press Brake Buying Guide for Sheet Metal Shops in ASEAN: Tonnage, Tooling and Safety
A "100 tons x 3200 mm" press brake is a 3 mm mild-steel machine at full length — and only about 2.8 m of usable length in 3 mm stainless. Do the tonnage arithmetic before you compare prices, then negotiate the three items the quote never contains.
Buy the press brake that clears your thickest part, in your hardest material, at your longest bend — then check all three fit at once. Usually they do not. A quote headed "100 tons x 3200 mm" describes mild steel in one specific V-die opening; put 3 mm stainless on that frame and usable bend length falls to roughly 2.8 m. Do the tonnage arithmetic before you compare prices, then negotiate the three items the quote never contains: tooling tang standard, crowning system, safeguarding device.
The tonnage figure describes one material and one die
Industry practice calculates air-bending force as **P = 1.42 x UTS x t² x L ÷ V** — tensile strength, thickness squared, bend length, over the V-die opening. Thickness is squared, so 3 mm to 4 mm is not 33% more force but 78% more before you touch the die. Shop practice sets the V opening near eight times thickness, which recovers part of that.
Run it against a real machine. The [MP-100/3200 electro-hydraulic servo press brake](/en/products/mapa-machine-tool-anhui-mp-100-3200-electro-hydraulic-servo-bending-machine) is rated **1000 kN over 3200 mm**, with 400 mm throat depth and 460 mm maximum opening. At 450 MPa mild steel, 3 mm thick, V = 24 mm, full length: about **767 kN**. Comfortable. Same bend at 4 mm with V = 32 mm: about **1,022 kN**. The frame is 22 kN short. It is a 3 mm full-length machine, not a 4 mm one, and no line on the datasheet says so.
Now change material. Industry sources put 304 stainless at roughly **1.4–1.5x** mild-steel force, aluminium near **0.5x**. At 1.5x, that 3 mm full-length bend wants about 1,150 kN — so on a 1000 kN frame, usable length in 3 mm 304 drops to about **2.8 m**. For shops feeding food equipment, commercial kitchens, marine work and electronics enclosures, that is not an edge case.
The smaller [all-electric EP series](/en/products/mapa-machine-tool-anhui-mp-ep12-600-ep18-800-ep30-1250s-all-electric-servo-cnc-press-brake) sharpens the point: the EP30/1250S is rated 300 kN over a 1250 mm table, and 3 mm mild steel across that full table needs almost exactly 300 kN. Both nameplate numbers are true; together they leave no margin.
Ask for a tonnage table naming **material, thickness, V-die opening and bend length for your part** — not a generic chart. Ask separately about bottoming and coining, which need multiples of air-bending force: a machine that air-bends 3 mm may not bottom it.
Three different machines share one category name
"Bending machine" covers at least three envelopes that cannot substitute for each other:
- **Press brake** — punch and die, operator manipulates the blank. The [XQL 3200 hybrid CNC press brake](/en/products/xql-laser-china-xql-3200-down-acting-hybrid-cnc-press-brake) is this type, with a C-frame throat compensation device under the throat.
- **Panel bender** — the blank is clamped and blades fold it. The [MP A180 pressure-arm bending centre](/en/products/mapa-machine-tool-anhui-mp-a180-pressure-arm-type-flexible-bending-machine-center) carries 13 axes, bends 0–360°, holds a 1.2 mm minimum radius on 1000 x 1250 mm blanks — and tops out at **2.0 mm in aluminium**.
- **Folder** — fixed blade, panel work. The [ZG1250 servo hydraulic folder](/en/products/foshan-nanhai-zhanggong-mechanical-eouipment-zg-1250-hydraulic-bending-machine-with-servo-position) states capacity as **1.0 x 1250 mm** on a 5.5 kW drive.
A panel bender beats a press brake on a twenty-fold enclosure and cannot touch a 4 mm bracket. Compare only inside one envelope — across them the cheaper number means nothing. [Browse the bending category](/en/products?category=mt-sheet-metal-bending) with that filter in mind.
"Working speed" is a safety limit, not a performance figure
The MP-100/3200 lists 210 mm/s quick descent, **12 mm/s working speed**, 150 mm/s return; the larger MP-200/4100 lists 10 mm/s working.
That bottom number is not vendor modesty. Press brake safeguarding standards — EN 12622 in Europe, and ANSI B11.3, which adopted much of it — require the ram to drop to a slow closing speed, commonly cited as **≤10 mm/s**, before entering the zone where an optical guard is muted and the operator's hands sit near the die. The working-speed column therefore describes a regime the standard caps. A quote advertising a far faster figure is describing either the approach stroke or a machine not safeguarded that way. Ask which, in writing.
So ram speed is not your cycle-time bottleneck. Assume a 100 mm approach, 15 mm bend and 115 mm return and you get roughly **2.5 seconds of ram motion per bend** — arithmetic from stated assumptions, not a measurement. Handling a 3.2 m blank takes far longer. Spend on backgauge axes, sheet followers and a second operator station before you spend on speed.
Three line items the quote will not contain
**Tooling tang standard.** Punch and die shanks are not universal. European/Amada (Promecam) uses a **13 mm** tang, Wila–Trumpf "New Standard" **20 mm**, American style a ½-inch tang; they do not interchange without adapters. Chinese machines usually ship European style — but "usually" is not a purchase order. Put the tang dimension in millimetres in the contract, and confirm a Bangkok, Johor or Ho Chi Minh City tooling house stocks that standard before you need a gooseneck punch in year three.
**Crowning.** Every ram deflects under load; over 3.2 m that appears as a bend angle differing end-to-middle. The MP-100/3200 specifies a CNC-controlled convex compensation system, the XQL-3200 a throat compensation device; cheaper machines use manual shim wedges. Ask which, then ask for a measured angle-along-length result on a test bend in **your** material.
**Safeguarding.** A light curtain in front of the machine and a laser AOPD tracking the punch tip are different products with different consequences — only the second lets an operator hold the part near the die and cycle on a foot pedal. Running it in a tropical shop
Hydraulic machines carry a lot of oil — the MP-100/3200 lists a **400-litre tank**. In an un-airconditioned Rayong or Bekasi shop, oil temperature is a variable and Y1/Y2 repeatability drifts as viscosity falls. Ask for the specified ambient operating range, and whether an oil cooler sits in the base price. It usually does not.
Do not let a vendor sell you all-electric on the electricity bill. Thailand's ERC has held the average tariff at **3.95 baht per unit excluding VAT for the September–December 2026 billing period**. Assume the 7.5 kW pump averages 40% load across an 8-hour shift, 250 days: 6,000 kWh, about **23,700 baht a year**. Even on a vendor's own most favourable claim — 60 kWh a shift hydraulic against 12 kWh electric — the gap stays under 50,000 baht a year. That is arithmetic from stated assumptions, and it will not repay an all-electric premium by itself. The EP datasheet claims **under 0.5 kW at idle** and a 0.005 mm Y-axis setting increment: buy it for thermal stability and for the oil you never change or dispose of, not for the meter.
Before you sign
Get four things in writing: a tonnage table naming material, thickness, V-die and length; the tang standard in millimetres; how crowning is achieved; and which safeguarding device is fitted. Press brakes classify under HS heading **8462**, CNC press brakes at subheading **8462.23** — confirm the line with your broker and prepare ACFTA Form E.
